A few days ago I saw an article about this in the paper.  So, I checked online and the BBC has an article about it.

“This was a rather small and peaceful eruption but we are concerned that it could trigger an eruption at the nearby Katla volcano, a vicious volcano that could cause both local and global damage,” said Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Science, Associated Press news agency reported.

The article I saw in the local paper said more about this other volcano that could cause global problems if it erupts.

I really want to go to Iceland on this trip. (It’s funny, back in the early 2000’s I really wanted to go to Greenland – still haven’t done it.  At some point, when I kept hearing news of how much the glaciers have receded, I kind of felt like I’d waited too long and that the place I had wanted to go no longer existed in the same way.)  So, now with the gloom and doom scenario in the paper, I’m thinking it’s now or never.

So the gloom and doom scenario… Don’t quote me on this but it was that if the big one goes it will release all these terrible gases, and it will cause a very extreme winter and crazy weather, and the crops etc. in will not be good.  Apparently the last time that big bad volcano went off it caused a famine in Europe, and the Mississippi River was frozen in New Orleans, and people in the British Isles died from the poison gases.  I’m pretty sure the article said that some speculate that last eruption helped cause the French Revolution because of all the unrest.  I know I may be sounding a bit hysterical.  But this is how I remember what I read in the newspaper.  Maybe I’m mis-remembering it, I can’t find the article online.  The article I can find online from my local paper is much more tame.
